What is Cannabis Equivalency?
Cannabis equivalency refers to how different types of cannabis products are measured. Since cannabis can come in many forms—flower, edibles, oils, concentrates— equivalents were developed to identify what their possession limit would be.
Equivalent Amounts per Schedule 3 of the Cannabis Act
Class of Cannabis | Quantity that is equivalent to 1 g of dried cannabis |
---|---|
Dried Cannabis | 1 g |
Fresh Cannabis | 5 g |
Solids Containing Cannabis | 15 g |
Non-Solids Containing Cannabis, other than cannabis beverages | 70 g |
Cannabis Concentrates | 0.25 g |
Cannabis Beverages | 570 g |
Cannabis Plant Seeds | 1 seed |
What does this mean for my next purchase?
As already noted, you are only legally allowed to purchase the 30g equivalent of dried cannabis. Depending on what type of cannabis products you are purchasing, the allowed quantities will vary. The below chart shows the maximum limit for different cannabis products:
Cannabis Possession Limits by Format | |
---|---|
Product Type | Purchase and Possession Limit |
Dried Flower Products | 30 g |
Concentrates (solid or liquid) | 7.5 g |
355ml Beverages | 48 cans |
Edibles | 450 g |
Oils | 2100 g |
Seeds | 30 seeds |
What about plants?
If you choose to grow cannabis yourself, you are only permitted to possess up to four cannabis plants per private residential dwelling (not per person).
While cannabis is legally available for use in Canada, possession limits remain an important aspect of its regulation. These limits are designed to balance accessibility while also ensuring that cannabis consumption remains responsible and controlled.
